Archive for December, 2013
We will be holding our annual Christmas Feast on Monday, December 23 in our dining hall located at 535 E. Yanonali Street from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Our staff and volunteers will serve meals and distribute gifts to men, women and children. We’re able to serve up to 400 people in need through charitable donations of food and gift items from the Santa Barbara community.
The holidays can be a joyful time, but a lonely time for those that are struggling with poverty, homelessness, and addiction. We offer hope and a new beginning, so many of the graduates of our 12-month residential recovery program started here with a simple holiday meal.
Volunteers are still needed to help serve. Please contact Lizzy MacRae at 966-1316 ext. 107.
It’s early, very cold and just light outside. Inside the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission, things are warm and bustling in our chapel– and its only 6:45 a.m. A petite nurse with a strong voice has everyone corralled and in line for something very necessary – a TB test.
Jan Fadden, Heidi Rigoli, and Kathy Molky, nurses from the Parish Nursing Community Outreach Program, came this morning to place TB tests for Rescue Mission homeless guests. In this winter season, new folks are arriving all the time and regulars guests have tests that expired. With tuberculosis an ever-present threat in any shelter, the team tested 25 men and women right after breakfast, and identified six people who need to get a chest x-ray at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Clinic.
Our guests will return Friday at 7:00 a.m. to have the tests read and get cards proving they had a negative reaction. Any unclear results will be referred for further testing. Santa Barbara Rescue Mission sends a big THANK YOU to these women and Parish Nursing for their help.
