As a child Marci suffered from verbal abuse and an absent father. She grew up in Santa Barbara. With low self-esteem she turned to drugs. Soon she was selling drugs and using. Little by little she lost everything — family, friends, and her home. She struggled with her addiction and finally found herself living on the streets.
Alone and afraid she slept in bushes. Sometimes she’d sneak into a laundry room at night. She was always hungry. She was arrested and spent some time in jail. Upon her release she came to the Mission’s Bethel House where she was welcomed with open arms. She rebuilt her life, graduated last year and has a full-time job. She thinks of Bethel House as a “miracle factory” — where she’s seen many women whose lives are changed while they are here. She learned how to restart her life.
